Detransition & Self Acceptance | with Chiara
I wanted testosterone at 16; my mom refused. Today I’m grateful—those irreversible changes would have compounded my trauma. Kids deserve therapy, not pharma-driven transition.
Overview
21-year-old Chiara tells Benjamin Boyce how, from 16-18, she lived as a trans man to escape sexual-trauma and internalized homophobia, binge-watching FTM vlogs and dissociating into an online male alter-ego. A nine-month, no-internet horse-farm internship broke the spell, leading her to desist and co-found “Peak Resilience” to warn teens and parents that early medical transition is irreversible and driven by profit-driven affirmation culture.
Full Video Summary
Chiara, a 21-year-old detrans woman, tells Benjamin Boyce that from age 16 to 18 she lived as a trans man, convinced she had been “born into the wrong body.” Raised by a single mother who refused to allow cross-sex hormones, Chiara instead pursued a purely social transition: she adopted a male name online, cut her hair into a crew-cut, bound her chest, dressed exclusively in men’s clothing, and practiced lowering her voice and adopting stereotypically masculine body language. She describes the period as one of near-total dissociation, “living in an alter ego” in hopes of escaping the trauma of sexual abuse and the social pain of being a gender-nonconforming lesbian. Hours each day were spent on Tumblr and YouTube binge-watching FTM transition vlogs whose creators were “idolized” by thousands of commenters; the combination of social-media reinforcement, internalized homophobia, and the desire to flee femaleness after sexual victimization pushed her toward trans identification. The turning point came when, at 17, she left home for a nine-month internship on a horse farm with almost no internet access. The physical labor and enforced disconnection from online trans communities allowed her to mature, accept her body’s capabilities, and begin questioning the ideology. Returning home, she discovered detransition narratives on radical-feminist forums and realized she was not alone. Chiara now identifies as a lesbian woman, rejects the concept of gender as a set of oppressive roles, and believes that sexuality is rooted in biological sex rather than identity. She is grateful her mother blocked medical transition, saying she would have taken testosterone “behind her back” had she possessed the means, and today views puberty blockers and early medicalization of minors as “barbaric.” Together with three other young detransitioned or desisted women (all in their early twenties), Chiara co-founded “Peak Resilience” in January 2020. The collective posts videos, podcasts, and soon articles aimed at filling what they see as a deliberate silence around detransition. Their goal is to offer alternative narratives to teenagers experiencing rapid-onset gender dysphoria, provide one-on-one support to questioning youth and anxious parents, and counter what she calls the “affirmation-only” culture driven by both social pressure and pharmaceutical interests. Chiara emphasizes that their work is not anti-trans but rather pro-informed-consent, advocating for slower, therapy-first approaches and the right to question transition without being “instantly called a TERF or a Nazi.”
