Surviving Social Justice | A Detrans Story, with Mazy
I turned into this old man, then that old man just died, and now I'm reborn as a woman—healing from medical harms the system doesn't even know how to treat.
Overview
Mazy describes her female-to-male-to-female journey beginning with childhood health issues and trauma, transitioning at seventeen with testosterone and later a hysterectomy and oophorectomy, before a 2023 spiritual transformation led her to detransition. She recounts the harms of social justice activism in Minneapolis, the medical complications of sudden menopause and hormonal psychosis, and now advocates for slowing down gender-affirming care while emphasizing trauma-informed therapy and somatic healing.
Full Video Summary
Mazy grew up in Minneapolis in a sheltered household with a domineering, feminist mother and a distant father. From early childhood she felt instinctively that she was a boy, experienced severe lower abdominal pain, body lock-ups, and trauma, and was diagnosed with PTSD at sixteen. At fourteen she encountered transgenderism through the story of Brandon Teena and David Reimer, which she felt explained her condition. Convinced that medical transition would resolve her health issues, she pursued testosterone as a minor, enduring a year of therapy and multiple rejections before starting hormones in December 2012 at age seventeen. Testosterone initially reduced her pain and stabilized her mood, and she lived for roughly a decade as a straight man named Jack, passing well and working in youth nonprofits. However, she found herself targeted in intensely social-justice-oriented workplaces in Minneapolis, culminating in a witch hunt after she asked a female coworker on a date. She was also present during the George Floyd unrest, which she experienced as the culmination of a cultural shift that had been building since 2014. After about five and a half years on testosterone, she underwent a radical hysterectomy and oophorectomy at her own request, believing female organs were a deformity. By early 2023 she felt she had aged rapidly. Then, in March 2023, she experienced a profound spiritual transformation that she describes as an energetic restructuring. Over the following weeks she underwent an ego death: a female persona emerged in her dreams, she unexpectedly fell in love with a male friend, and she began instinctively living as a woman again, buying women’s clothing and changing her demeanor. She detransitioned medically in June 2023, but a transgender-specialist OBGYN prescribed birth control containing far too little estrogen, throwing her into sudden menopause and hormonal psychosis. She suffered convulsions, delusions, hallucinations, and multiple hospitalizations before functional medicine doctors quadrupled her estrogen dose. She now deals with ongoing nervous-system issues and trauma but is rebuilding her life through music, documentary work, and a Discord support community. She advocates for slowing down medical transition, supporting parents, and prioritizing trauma therapies like somatic experiencing and internal family systems before hormones or surgery.
